Why Is My Skin So Dry After Showering?

Hot water, long showers, and hard water strip skin — here's what helps.

Dry, tight skin right after a shower is incredibly common, and the usual culprits are heat, time, and water itself. Hot water and long showers strip away the skin's natural oils faster than cool, quick ones — which is why your skin can feel tight the moment you step out, especially in winter.

The water itself plays a role too: hard, heavily chlorinated tap water can leave skin feeling drier than softer, filtered water. The simple fixes are cooler, shorter showers, moisturizing while skin is still slightly damp to lock in moisture, and — if your water is hard or heavily chlorinated — considering a shower filter to reduce what's drying your skin at the source. For persistent or severe dryness, see a dermatologist. More in tallow for sensitive skin.

Try a BHG shower filter for gentler shower water.
