Why Does My Water Bottle Smell?

Smell comes from bacteria and film in the lid and seals — here's how to clean it out.

A smelly water bottle almost always comes down to one thing: bacteria and film building up in spots that never fully dry. The damp, dark inside of a capped bottle — and especially the lid, threads, and seals — is an ideal place for odor to develop, particularly if you cap it wet or only ever rinse it.

The fix is real cleaning, not just rinsing. Wash daily with warm soapy water and a bottle brush, take apart the lid to clean the gasket where gunk hides, and let it air-dry fully with the lid off rather than sealing it damp. For stubborn smells, soak with baking soda and warm water. A non-porous material like stainless steel helps, because — unlike scratched plastic — it won't hold odors once it's clean. More in keeping water clean on the go.
