UV400 is a rating meaning the lenses block essentially all light up to 400 nanometers — which covers the full range of UVA and UVB ultraviolet light. It's the one hard, well-established spec to look for in eyewear, because UV protection for your eyes genuinely matters, the same way it does for your skin.

This is separate from blue light filtering, which is about visible light from screens, not ultraviolet. A pair of glasses can offer UV400 protection, blue light filtering, or both — they're different things. When you're choosing eyewear that'll see outdoor use, UV400 is the protection spec worth confirming. For blue light glasses used mostly indoors at screens, blue light filtering is the relevant feature, and UV400 is a bonus for any outdoor wear. More in our UV400 explainer.
