Is It Safe to Store Acidic Foods in Stainless Steel?
For short-term storage, yes — storing acidic foods like tomato sauce, citrus, or vinegar dressings in quality stainless steel is generally fine. Food-grade stainless steel is non-reactive enough for everyday use, which is why it's used in cookware and commercial kitchens worldwide. Popping leftover tomato-based pasta in a steel container overnight isn't a problem.
The nuance is time. Very prolonged contact with highly acidic or salty foods — think days, not hours — can occasionally cause minor surface spotting on the steel. For normal fridge storage timeframes, this isn't a real concern. If you're storing something acidic for an extended period, just give the container a good rinse afterward. For everyday leftovers, steel handles acidic foods without issue. More in steel vs. plastic.
