Should You Foam Roll Before or After a Workout?

Both work — a light pass before, a slower roll after. Here's the simple approach.

Whether to roll before or after a workout depends on your goal, and many people do both. Before a workout, a short, light roll can be part of a warm-up to help loosen up and get moving. After a workout, slower rolling is often used as part of a cool-down to ease tightness while muscles are warm.

A simple way to think about it: a brief, lighter pass beforehand to prep, and a slower, more relaxed roll afterward to wind down. Neither is mandatory, and rolling isn't a substitute for an actual warm-up of movement. Keep pressure tolerable and avoid grinding on a sore spot. Rolling is for general mobility and comfort; sharp pain or an injury is a reason to see a professional, not roll harder. More in cork yoga & massage tools.
