Night Mode vs. Blue Light Glasses: Which Is Better?

Night mode covers one screen; glasses cover everything you look at. Here's how they compare.

Night mode (or "night shift") warms your screen's colors, cutting some of the blue light a display emits in the evening. It genuinely reduces screen blue light, so it's a useful, free first step — but it only affects that one screen, not the rest of the bright, blue-heavy light in a room (overhead LEDs, other devices), and it doesn't change screens that lack the feature.

So it's not really night mode versus glasses — they address overlapping but different things. Night mode handles the single screen it's on; blue light glasses reduce blue light reaching your eyes from everything you look at, including TVs and lights. Many people use both in the evening: night mode on the phone, glasses for the room. The simplest baseline is still dimming everything before bed. More in our blue light and sleep guide.
