Sleeping with the lights on isn't dangerous, but it does tend to work against good sleep. Light is the main cue your body uses to tell day from night, so a bright room can make sleep lighter and more easily disrupted, even if you don't fully wake. Many people sleep through it out of habit, but most rest better in a dark room.

If you need some light — for safety, kids, or comfort — the trick is to keep it dim and warm rather than bright and blue. A low amber night light is far gentler on sleep than an overhead bulb or a screen. If darkness isn't fully in your control, a sleep mask is a simple fix. More on this in managing light in the evening.
