How Do You Install a Shower Filter?

It's a few-minute DIY job — unscrew, tape the threads, hand-tighten. Here's how.

Most shower filters are designed for straightforward DIY installation — no plumber needed. The typical filter head replaces your existing showerhead, or an inline filter screws on between the shower arm and your current head. You hand-tighten the connection (often with a bit of plumber's tape on the threads to prevent drips) and you're done in a few minutes.

The standard steps: unscrew the old showerhead, wrap the exposed threads with plumber's tape, screw on the filter (or filter-plus-head) hand-tight, then run the water to check for leaks and snug it a little more if needed. No special tools beyond maybe the tape. Because shower fittings are largely standardized, most filters fit common setups. If yours leaks after tightening, re-seat it with fresh tape rather than forcing it. More in our shower filter guide.
