The common guidance is to replace your toothbrush — or brush head — about every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed and splayed out. Once bristles lose their shape, they don't clean as effectively, so a worn brush is doing less than you think no matter how long you spend with it.

A couple of other prompts to swap it: after you've been sick, and any time the bristles are visibly bent. For natural-bristle brushes, drying it fully between uses (stored upright, bristles up) helps it last its full life. If you're trying to cut plastic waste, this is also a good moment to consider a natural-handle brush instead of replacing one plastic brush with another. More in boar bristle vs. nylon.

Try a Dentō boar-bristle toothbrush.
