How Long Should You Wait to Brush After Eating?

Wait about 30 minutes after acidic foods before brushing — here's why.

Most dentists suggest waiting about 30 minutes to brush after eating, especially after acidic foods or drinks like citrus, soda, coffee, or wine. Acid temporarily softens the enamel surface, and brushing right away can scrub at it while it's vulnerable. Giving it half an hour lets saliva neutralize the acid and the enamel re-harden first.

If you want that just-brushed freshness right after a meal, rinsing with water or chewing sugar-free gum can tide you over until the 30 minutes are up. This mainly matters after acidic items — after a neutral meal it's less of a concern. The simplest rule: don't brush immediately after something acidic.
