A good set of wool dryer balls lasts a long time — typically through hundreds of loads, often a year or more of regular use, and frequently longer. Because they work mechanically rather than being consumed like a single-use sheet, they hold up load after load until the wool finally starts to wear thin or unravel.

You'll know they're near the end when they start shedding wool fibers, shrinking noticeably, or coming apart. Until then, they keep doing their job. To get the most life out of them, store them somewhere they can dry out between loads (the cotton bag they come in is ideal) rather than sealed away damp. Compared to buying a box of dryer sheets every few weeks, a single set going for hundreds of loads is a big reduction in cost and waste. More in wool dryer balls vs. dryer sheets.
