Does Stainless Steel Rust?
Quality stainless steel is highly rust-resistant, but "stainless" doesn't mean "impossible to rust" — it means it resists rust far better than ordinary steel. The chromium in stainless steel forms a thin protective layer that shields it from corrosion. Under normal kitchen use, a good steel container won't rust.
You can see surface spots in a few situations: prolonged contact with salt or very acidic foods, harsh abrasive scrubbing that damages the protective layer, or leaving it wet against other metals. These are usually surface marks rather than true structural rust, and they wipe off. To keep steel pristine: rinse off salt and acid, dry it rather than leaving it soaking, and skip steel-wool scrubbers. Done that way, it stays clean for years. More in steel vs. plastic.
