What's the Difference Between Body Lotion and Balm?

Lotion is light and water-based; balm is rich and sealing — here's when to use each.

The difference is mostly water content and texture. A lotion is lighter and water-based, so it spreads easily, absorbs quickly, and feels light — good for everyday use and warmer weather. A balm is oil- or wax-based with little or no water, so it's thicker, richer, and more occlusive, meaning it forms a protective layer that helps seal in moisture.

That makes balms better suited to very dry skin, rough patches, and harsh winter conditions, while lotions suit lighter daily moisturizing. Many people use both: a lotion for all-over daily use and a balm for problem spots, hands, or overnight. Tallow-based products sit on the balm end of the spectrum — rich and sealing rather than light. Neither is "better"; it depends on how dry your skin is. More in what is tallow skincare.
