Wool dryer balls are generally fine for most fabrics, including towels, bedding, and everyday clothing — in fact they're great for fluffing up towels and bulky items. For the vast majority of laundry, you can use them without a second thought.

A little extra care for delicates: very delicate items, fine knits, or anything you'd normally hand-dry or lay flat are better kept out of the dryer altogether (balls or not), since machine drying itself is the bigger factor there. The balls are gentle — soft wool, no hard edges — so they're not rough on fabric, but the heat and tumbling of any dryer is what delicate items dislike. For normal loads, wool balls are a safe, gentle choice. More in wool dryer balls vs. dryer sheets.
